Renewal Day 2006 presented by Puget Sound Parish Nurse and Health
Ministries on September 30, 2006 at Aurora Church of the Nazarene in
Shoreline, Washington, was lead by Denise McGuiness, PhD, MDiv and addressed
"Midlife Spirituality: Integrity, Wisdom and Transcendence."
The setting was an inviting scene complete with tables dressed in purple, wearing flowers, scented candles and special treats. Music and an altar welcomed 35 women to the annual session for spiritual renewal. Most were Parish Nurses and Health Ministers seeking a chance to grow and learn more about themselves and each other.
The subject addressing the journey through the second half of life was
explored using tools such as solitude, journaling, dream meanings, group
support, meditative reading and imaging. Along the way, participants became
more familiar with the significance of the integrity, wisdom and
transcendence that mark midlife spirituality.
A special highlight that challenged individual creativity was an art
activity that used various colorful materials to show expressions of one’s
personal journey in midlife. Some of the things that were shared were
pictures, collages, poetry, and clay art. Through these reflections many
feelings were expressed.
The group was nourished as always with wonderful food and drink before the day ended, and comments heard around the room all praised the value of the day and the speaker: “This is a safe place to share feelings.” “Inspiring to hear other people’s ideas, finding common threads.” “Enjoyed use of tools.” “Useful to explore stages of life.”

Could you be a mentor (trusted advisor) to other Parish Nurses or Health Ministers? Have you been known to support, encourage, pray, listen, teach, model, accept or be trusted by another? Do you seek to be patient, disciplined, committed, joyful, Godly, enthusiastic, wise, mature, discreet, loving and available? If the answer is "yes," then you have been called according to 2 Timothy and St. Paul to be a mentor with God’s help and guidance. You don’t have to look for mentees — they will look for you.
I am reminded of another type of nurse mentor that provides nurturing of younger, growing living things found in the woods. Have you ever come upon a ‘nurse log’ while walking in the forest? Next time you go notice how many plants and varieties of living things grow on a dead log often dressed in moss, but still providing for others and doing its part to carry on a legacy. Even before it falls to the ground it can stand tall and naked to the top of the canopy where new life nests in its dead wood reaching for light.
As mentors who have experience and wisdom to share, we are like the nurse logs continuing to provide for the newcomers.
