The mission of Puget Sound Health Ministries (PSHM, formerly Puget Sound Parish Nurse & Health Ministries) is to educate and support parish nurses and health ministers who promote wholeness of body, mind, and spirit within their faith communities.
PSHM's purpose is to prepare nurses and lay ministers to collaborate with the congregation in maintaining and improving the well being of the church community in a holistic manner. "Church Community" is defined as an inner-city church, an urban church, a rural church, or a church in an international setting. The ministry has a commitment to physical and spiritual healing and to wellness. The emphasis is on becoming a liaison with established community health organizations and professional caregivers and on analyzing the interrelationship between faith and health.
We provide:
PSHM officially became a corporation in 1996 and was registered as "Puget Sound Parish Nurse Ministries." The first meeting was initiated in November 1993, by Dr. Kenneth Bakken. Five nurses gathered to plan and coordinate the activities and subsequent growth of this group of nurses interested in parish nursing. It has been a 501c3 non-profit corporation since 1997. The first Basic Preparation for Parish Nurses course was developed through the International Parish Nurse Resource Center in St. Louis, Missouri, and offered in September 1994. Since 1995, affiliation with Pacific Lutheran University allows participants to complete the Basic Parish Nurse Preparation Course for college credit or continued education units.
The ministry leaders understand and believe that the journey towards wholeness and well-being is not just a matter of medicine and medical practice. Rather, it involves and requires the integration of psychological, physical, and spiritual factors, with an approach to health, healing, and health care rooted in the Judeo-Christian tradition. We believe that the position of a registered professional nurse within the church is a creative way by which the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of members can be met. We believe that personal and professional attention to the mind, body, and spirit will assist parish nurses to nurture and promote healing as they witness to the integration of faith and healing.
As a faith community nurse, I try to bring a sense of God's healing presence as I minister to body, mind, and spirit.
